    Tuhin Kanta Pandey assumed charge as the 11th chairman of capital markets regulator SEBI. He replaces Madhabi Puri Buch, whose three-year tenure ended on 28th February 2025. Pandey, a career bureaucrat who was serving as the Finance Secretary till now, was appointed chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) by the government on 27th February 2025. His appointment comes at a crucial time for Sebi, the regulatory body responsible for overseeing India's securities and capital markets. As Sebi Chairman, Pandey will play a key role in strengthening market regulations, ensuring investor protection, and overseeing reforms in the capital markets. His extensive experience in finance and economic policy is expected to aid in the effective functioning of the regulatory body.

  • Rajnath Singh inaugurates Aero India 2025 [10 Feb 2025]

    Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Aero India 2025, the 15th edition of Asia’s largest aerospace and defence exhibition, in Bengaluru. Aero India 2025 is being held over 42,438 square metres, with participation from 30 defence ministers and 43 military chiefs from various countries. A total of 90 nations will be represented at the event. The exhibition will feature 70 fighter jets, cargo aircraft, and trainer aircraft, along with 30 helicopters, all performing aerial stunts. Russian and American fighter jets will be the key highlights of the exhibition. Additionally, over 900 manufacturers from different countries will showcase advancements in AI, drones, cybersecurity, global aerospace, and emerging technologies. Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) products will be prominently displayed in this edition of the show.

This milestone strengthens India’s position as a global leader in renewable energy and marks a crucial step toward the country’s goal of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030, as highlighted in a press release from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

  • RBI projects 6.7% GDP growth for FY26; inflation in FY25 to remain at 4.8% [07 Feb 2025]

    The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has projected a real GDP growth of 6.4% for FY25, with expectations of economic activity picking up in the second half of the fiscal year. This growth is anticipated to be driven by improvements in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, while announcing the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, stated that for FY26, GDP growth is estimated at 6.7%. The quarterly projections for FY26 are as follows: Q1 FY26: 6.7%, Q2 FY26: 7.0%, Q3 FY26: 6.5%, and Q4 FY26: 6.5%. On the inflation front, the central bank expects Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation to ease to 4.8% in FY25, with Q4 FY25 inflation projected at 4.4%. For FY26, inflation is forecasted at 4.2%, with quarterly estimates as follows: Q1 FY26: 4.5%, Q2 FY26: 4.0%, Q3 FY26: 3.8%, and Q4 FY26: 4.2%.

  • DRDO successfully conducts successive flight-trials of Very Short-Range Air Defence System [01 Feb 2025]

    Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted three successive flight-trials of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. These tests were carried out against high-speed targets flying at very low altitude. During all the three flight-tests, the missiles intercepted and completely destroyed the targets having reduced thermal signature mimicking low flying drones at different flying conditions. The flight-tests were carried out in final deployment configuration where in two field operators carried out weapon readiness, target acquisition and missile firing.

    The flight data captured by various range instruments like Telemetry, Electro-Optical Tracking System and Radar deployed by Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, confirmed the pin-point accuracy and established the unique capability of VSHORADS missile system in neutralizing drones along with other classes of aerial threats. The flight-tests were witnessed by senior officials of DRDO, Armed Forces and development and production partners. VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence system designed and developed indigenously by Research Center Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Development cum Production Partners. The missile system has the capability to meet the needs of all the three branches of the Armed Forces, viz. Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
