History of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup

The first FIH Men's Hockey World Cup was held in 1971 in Barcelona, Spain, with only ten teams competing. The tournament was organized to commemorate the golden jubilee of the FIH's founding. Pakistan emerged as the inaugural champions, defeating Spain 1-0 in the final. Since then, the tournament has been held every four years, with the number of teams and the format changing over time. The most recent tournament was held in Bhubaneswar, India, in 2018, with Belgium winning their first-ever World Cup title.

Format of the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup

The FIH Men's Hockey World Cup format has evolved over time. The current format features sixteen teams, with twelve directly qualifying and four qualifying through a qualification tournament. The tournament is divided into two stages: the pool stage and the knockout stage.

Qualification

Twelve teams qualify directly based on their FIH world rankings, while four teams qualify through a qualification tournament. The qualification tournament features teams that did not qualify directly and is held approximately six months before the main tournament.
