Japan-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise – Jimex 22 [12 Sep 2022]

The sixth edition of Japan India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22) hosted by the Indian Navy commenced in the Bay of Bengal on 11 Sep 22. The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships are being led by R Adm Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, and Indian Naval ships by R Adm Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet. The Indian Naval ships welcomed JMSDF ships Izumo, a Helicopter Carrier, and Takanami, a Guided Missile Destroyer, on their arrival in the Bay of Bengal. The Indian Navy is being represented by three indigenously designed and built warships; Sahyadri, a multi-purpose stealth frigate, and Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes Kadmatt and Kavaratti. Guided Missile Destroyer Ranvijay, Fleet Tanker Jyoti, Offshore Patrol Vessel Sukanya, submarines, MIG 29K fighter aircraft, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, and ship-borne helicopters are also participating in the exercise. JIMEX 22 involves two Phases; exercises at sea and a harbor phase at Visakhapatnam.

Sibi George was appointed as the next Indian ambassador to Japan. George, a 1993-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently the Ambassador of India to Kuwait. He will replace Sanjay Kumar Verma as India's envoy to Japan.

Sri Lanka Wins Asia Cup (Men's) 2022 Title [11 Sep 2022]

Asia Cup (Men's) 2022 Cricket tournament was successfully organized from August 27 to September 11, 2022, in the UAE. Sri Lanka emerged as the champion of the Asia Cup (Men's) 2022 title, the most prestigious cricket trophy in Asian cricket organized this time in the T20 format. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai to win its 6th Asia Cup title.

US Open 2022 Men's Singles [11 Sep 2022]

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia from Spain clinched the US Open Men's Singles title as he outplayed Casper Ruud from Norway 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the final at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. It is Garfia's first Grand Slam title. The win makes him the youngest player to ever win a Grand Slam, breaking fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal's record.

Kibithu Military Garrison Named After General Bipin Rawat [10 Sep 2022]

The Kibithu Military Garrison in Anjaw district of Arunachal Pradesh, located close to the LAC with China, was renamed General Bipin Rawat Military Garrison in honour of India's first Chief of Defence Staff in an event attended by Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brigadier B.D. Mishra (Retd.), Chief Minister Perna Khandu, other senior military and civilian dignitaries, and daughters of late India's first Chief of Defence Staff. During his tenure as 3 Corps Commander, General Rawat was in charge of the military station and had been involved in strengthening defences along the border in that area.

Charles III Appointed King of the United Kingdom [10 Sep 2022]

King Charles Philip Arthur George proclaimed the new King of England as King Charles-III after his mother Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8. His wife Camilla Parker Bowles will now be England's Queen consort - consort is the term used for the spouse of the monarch. Soon, the couple got the royal title of Duke and Duchess of Cornwall. King Charles has become head of the Commonwealth, an association of 56 independent countries. For 14 of these countries, as well as the UK, the King is head of state. These 14 countries are Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, St Christopher and Nevis, St Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, New Zealand, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu.

NTPC to supply RE Power to Military Engineering Services (MES) [09 Sep 2022]

NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated energy company has entered into an agreement to supply Renewable Energy Power to the armed forces (Military Engineering Services). This is the first-ever agreement by the Indian armed forces for sourcing power from Renewable Energy sources. This will go towards the gradual decarbonization of the armed forces.

Cabinet approves signing of MoU between India and United Arab Emirates on cooperation in the field of Education [07 Sep 2022]

The Union Cabinet chaired by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved to sign of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and the Ministry of Education of the Government of the United Arab Emirates on cooperation in the field of Education. The objective of the MoU is to further strengthen our ongoing educational collaboration between India and UAE and widen the scope of our engagements. This MoU will rejuvenate educational cooperation and increase academic mobility between India and UAE besides facilitating the exchange of information in order to promote mutual recognition of these qualifications. It also covers cooperation in TVET as UAE is a major work destination for Indians.

First Nasal Vaccine against COVID- 19 supported by DBT-BIRAC gets emergency use authorization from India drug regulator DCGI [07 Sep 2022]

Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and its PSU, Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) is delighted to announce approval from DCGI for emergency use authorization first of its kind intranasal COVID-19 Vaccine to Bharat Biotech (BBIL). Supported by DBT and BIRAC under the aegis of Mission COVID Suraksha, the mission was launched by DBT and implemented by BIRAC to reinforce and accelerate COVID-19 vaccine development efforts as part of Aatmanirbhar 3.0. Scientific leadership at various levels of vaccine development was provided by DBT laboratories and BIRAC. This is the fourth success story for the Covid-19 vaccine under mission Covid Suraksha. BBV154 is an intranasal replication-deficient chimpanzee adenovirus SARS-CoV-2 vectored vaccine. It consists of a replication-deficient ChAd vector expressing the stabilized Spike SARS-CoV-2 (Wuhan variant).

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud Nominated Executive Chairman of NALSA [02 Sep 2022]

President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Justice Chandrachud took up the position that became vacant after Justice U. U. Lalit was elevated as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI). The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has been constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 to provide free Legal Services to the weaker sections of society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi commissioned the country’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Indian Naval Ship (INS) Vikrant at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL). ? During the event, the Prime Minister also unveiled the new Naval Ensign (Nishaan), doing away with the colonial past and befitting the rich Indian maritime heritage. He dedicated the new ensign to Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Cabinet approves signing of an MoU between India and Nepal in the field of biodiversity conservation [31 Aug 2022]

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for signing an MoU with the Government of Nepal on biodiversity conservation, with a view to strengthen and enhance the coordination and cooperation in the field of forests, wildlife, environment, biodiversity conservation and climate change, including restoration of corridors and interlinking areas and share knowledge and best practices, between the two countries.

DRDO & Indian Navy successfully flight-test Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile [23 Aug 2022]

Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully flight tested Vertical Launch Short Range Surface-to-Air Missile (VL-SRSAM) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The flight test was carried out from an Indian Naval Ship against a high-speed unmanned aerial target for demonstration of vertical launch capability. The missiles, equipped with indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker, intercepted the target with high accuracy. The VL-SRSAM system has been indigenously designed and developed by DRDO. During the test launch, flight path and vehicle performance parameters were monitored using flight data, captured by various Range instruments such as Radar, Electro-optical tracking system (EOTS) and Telemetry systems deployed by ITR, Chandipur. The launch was monitored by senior scientists from various DRDO labs involved in the design and development of the system such as Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad and R&D Engineers, Pune.

Goa becomes the First ‘Har Ghar Jal’ Certified State [18 Aug 2022]

Goa and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu (D&NH and D&D) become the first ‘Har Ghar Jal’ certified State and UT in the country respectively, where people from all the villages have declared their village as ‘Har Ghar Jal’ through a resolution passed by Gram Sabha, certifying that all households in the villages have access to safe drinking water through taps, ensuring that "No One is Left Out". All 2.63 lakh rural households of Goa & 85,156 of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu have access to potable water through tap connection. Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship programme of the Government of India which was announced from the ramparts of Red Fort by the visionary Prime Minister on August 15, 2019. The mission aims to make provision of potable tap water supply in adequate quantity, of prescribed quality, and on a regular & long-term basis to every rural household of the country by 2024. The program is implemented by the Government of India in partnership with States/UTs.

Jagdeep Dhankar, the candidate of the Centre-ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has been declared the winner of the Vice Presidential election. Dhankar, 71, will be administered the oath to the office on August 11, a day after the tenure of incumbent Vice President Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to expire. Jagdeep Dhankar, the former West Bengal governor, defeated joint opposition's nominee Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential elections.

DRDO successfully test fires indigenously developed laser-guided ATGMs [04 Aug 2022]

Indigenously developed Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missiles (ATGM) were successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank (MBT) Arjun by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Army at KK Ranges with support of Armoured Corps Centre & School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar in Maharashtra. The missiles hit with precision and successfully destroyed the targets at two different ranges. Telemetry systems have recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missiles. The all-indigenous Laser Guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.

Delivery of Indigenous Aircraft Carries (IAC) Vikrant [28 Jul 2022]

Indian Navy has created maritime history by taking delivery of the prestigious Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant from her builder Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi. Designed by the Indian Navy's in-house Directorate of Naval Design (DND) and built by CSL, a Public Sector Shipyard under the Ministry of Shipping (MoS), the carrier is christened after her illustrious predecessor, India's first Aircraft Carrier which played a vital role in the 1971 war. The 262 meter long carrier has a full displacement of close to 45,000 tonnes which is much larger and more advanced than her predecessor. The ship is powered by four Gas Turbines totaling 88 MW power and has a maximum speed of 28 Knots. Built at an overall cost of close to Rs. 20,000 Crores.
