Avani Lekhara becomes the first Indian woman in history to win a Paralympic Gold medal in shooting [30 Aug 2021]

Avani Lekhara, 19-year-old para shooter, made history by winning the elusive Tokyo Paralympic Games gold. Competing in her maiden Paralympics, Avani shot 249.6 points in the R2 women’s 10m air rifle SH1 category for a Paralympic Record and equal the World Record. Earlier, Avani who works as an Assistant Conservator of Forests in Rajasthan and trains at the JDA Shooting Range in Jaipur, shot 621.7 points to finish seventh in qualification and secure a place in the final. She has been wheelchair-bound since a road accident in 2012. The school topper believes life is not about holding good cards but playing well with those one holds.

AL-MOHED AL-Hindi-2021 - 1st Ever Naval Exercise Between India and Saudi Arabia [10 Aug 2021]

The maiden naval exercise 'AL-MOHED AL-Hindi-2021 between the Indian Navy and Royal Saudi Naval Forces commenced on August 9, 2021. INS Kochi, the flagshipDestroyer of the Indian Western Fleet, arrived at the Portal-Jubail, Saudi Arabia representing India. A number of shores and sea-based drills were scheduled to take place between the two navies. INSKochi is the 2nd ship of the Kolkata class Stealth GuidedMissile Destroyer, built indigenously by Mazgon DockLimited (MDL) in Mumbai.

Parliament Passes Bill to End All Retrospective Taxation [06 Aug 2021]

A bill that aims to end all retrospective taxation imposed on indirect transfer of Indian assets was passed by the Lok Sabha on August 6, 2021. The Taxation Laws(Amendment) Bill 2021 was passed by Rajya Sabha on August 9, 2021. With this, all tax demands are made on companies like Cairn Energy and Vodafone using a 2012 legislation on indirect transfer of Indian assets prior to May 28, 2012 will be withdrawn.

KVIC’s Unique Plastic-Mixed Handmade Paper gets Patent for Invention [05 Aug 2021]

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has secured Patent registration for its innovative Plastic-mixed Handmade Paper developed to reduce plastic menace from nature. The patent certificate was issued to KVIC’s Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute (KNHPI), Jaipur, on 2nd August 2021, by the Controller of Patent, Intellectual Property of India. The idea of developing plastic-mixed handmade paper was invented in September 2018, and in just two months, i.e. in November 2018, the project was executed by the team of scientists at KNHPI. The plastic-mixed handmade paper was developed under Project REPLAN (REducing PLAstic from Nature). This is the first of its kind project in India, where plastic waste is de-structured, degraded, diluted and used with paper pulp while making handmade paper and thus reduces plastic waste from nature. The invention is aligned with the Prime Minister’s call for fighting the menace of single-use plastic.

VOC Port, the first Major Port to launch e-cars [05 Aug 2021]

The first batch of three e-cars was flagged off at the VO Chidambaranar Port Trust. These Tata Xpres-T electric vehicles have been supplied by M/s. Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a Joint venture of Public Sector Undertaking (PSU), under the Ministry of Power, on a wet-lease basis, for a period of 6 years. Three more e-cars will be deployed in near future. As a part of the wet-lease agreement, EESL will also be providing Charging points at the Port, Insurance, Registration, deployment of drivers, and maintenance of the vehicles. VOC Port will pay monthly recurring costs to EESL. The EVs being deployed comprise a 21.50 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, capable of powering the vehicle for 231 Kilometres in a single charge. The battery pack would be powered by an AC charger set-up that can simultaneously charge three cars (3 outputs) at a time with an output power rating of 3.3kW per car. The charger set-up would be able to charge the battery from 0 to 100% in 8 hours. With zero tailpipe emission, each electric vehicle would reduce the GHG footprint by more than 1.5 Tonnes of CO2 every year.

COMMENCEMENT OF SEA TRIALS OF INDIGENOUS AIRCRAFT CARRIER (IAC) ‘VIKRANT’ [04 Aug 2021]

Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant’ designed by Indian Navy's Directorate of Naval Design(DND) is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited(CSL), a Public Sector Shipyard under Ministry of Shipping(MoS). IAC is a leading example of the nation’s quest for “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” with more than 76% indigenous content. This is the maiden attempt of the Indian Navy and Cochin Shipyard to indigenously design and build an Aircraft Carrier. The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier is 262 m long, 62 m at the widest part and height of 59 m including the superstructure. There are 14 decks in all, including five in the superstructure. The ship has over 2,300 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1700 people, including specialised cabins to accommodate women officers. The ship has been designed with a very high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability, ‘Vikrant’ has a top speed of around 28 knots and cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The ship can accommodate an assortment of fixed wing and rotary aircraft.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the digital payment solution e-RUPI, a person and purpose-specific digital payment solution, today via video conference. e-RUPI is a cashless and contactless instrument for digital payment. Addressing the event, the Prime Minister said that the eRUPI voucher is going to play a huge role in making DBT more effective in digital transactions in the country and will give a new dimension to digital governance. This will help everyone in targeted, transparent, and leakage-free delivery. He said e-RUPI is a symbol of how India is progressing by connecting people’s lives with technology.

Government has declared 23rd January as Parakram Diwas to commemorate 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose [02 Aug 2021]

The government of India is celebrating the 125th Birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Inaugural function of 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was organized at Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata on 23rd January 2021 which was presided over by Hon’ble Prime Minister. Commemorative coins and stamps on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were released on the occasion. International Seminars were also organized on the 23rd January 2021 at Kolkata and 5th March 2021 at Jabalpur under the above commemoration. A high-Level Committee under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Prime Minister has been constituted for the commemoration. The Committee includes distinguished persons, historians, authors, experts, family members of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose as well as eminent persons associated with Azad Hind Fauz (INA). A gazette notification was issued on 19th Jan 2021 on a declaration of 23rd January as Parakram Diwas every year.
