Kandla becomes first Green SEZ
Kandla SEZ (KASEZ) was awarded IGBC Platinum Rating. KASEZ is the First Green SEZ to achieve the IGBC Green Cities Platinum Rating for Existing Cities. The plaque was presented to the KASEZ team. The efforts of the KASEZ team were applauded especially noting the fact that this was accomplished in the Bhuj region where water conservation and afforestation are critical interventions. This was a major achievement and is part of activities envisaged under the commitment of the Government to the Green SEZs Mission as part of celebrations marking India@75 - Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav.
India gets its 39th World Heritage Site
India’s nomination of Rudreswara Temple, (also known as the Ramappa Temple) at Palampet, Mulugu district, near Warangal in the state of Telangana has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. The decision was taken at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO. Ramappa Temple, a 13th-century engineering marvel named after its architect, Ramappa, was proposed by the government as its only nomination for the UNESCO World Heritage site tag for the year 2019.

Mirabai Chanu wins India’s first medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020: When one of India’s greatest moments in weightlifting was being hoisted into reality by the legendary Karnam Malleswari, at the Sydney Games in 2000, the state of Manipur was laying the ground for their own moment in the sun, albeit 21 years later. A generational effort that culminated in Mirabai Saikom Chanu’s monstrous 202-kg combined lift for the Tokyo Olympics silver medal in the 49-kg weightlifting category.
DRDO successfully flight-tests surface-to-air missile Akash-NG
Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested the New Generation Akash Missile (Akash-NG), a surface-to-air Missile from Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the coast of Odisha. The flight trial was conducted from a land-based platform with all weapon system elements such as Multifunction Radar, Command, Control & Communication System and launcher participating in the deployment configuration. The missile system has been developed by Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories. The launch was witnessed by the representatives of the Indian Air Force. In order to capture flight data, ITR deployed a number of Range stations like Electro-Optical Tracking System, Radar and Telemetry. The flawless performance of the entire weapon system has been confirmed by complete flight data captured by these systems. During the test, the missile demonstrated the high manoeuvrability required for neutralising fast and agile aerial threats. Once deployed, the Akash-NG weapon system will prove to be a force multiplier for the air defence capability of the Indian Air Force. Production agencies Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) also participated in the trials.

French film “Titane” wins the Palme d'Or, making its director Ms. Julia Ducournau just the second female filmmaker to win the festival’s top honor in its 74-year history. Ms. Renate Reinsve bags the Best Actress award for her role in the film “The Worst Person in the World” while Mr. Caleb Landry Jones wins the Best Actor award for his role in “Nitram”. Iranian director Mr. Ashgar Farhadi and Finnish Mr. Juho Kuosmanen share the Grand Prix award for their films “A Hero” (Iran) and “Compartment No. 6” (Finland), respectively.
India targets Rs.100 billion Blue Economy
India aims to achieve the Rs.100 billion Blue Economy through its Deep Ocean Mission(DOM) and ocean resources in the coming years. According to Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. Deep Ocean Mission will also have far-reaching benefits for the common man as it could help in providing clean drinking water and explore the avenues of desalination of water as well as extracting minerals from the ocean belt. Deep ocean Mission planned by the Ministry of Earth Science will be carried out in collaboration with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). It will be a major step in the direction of integrating and bringing together the efforts of the different streams of science operating under different MInistries in the Government.

NTPC to set up India’s single largest solar park at Rann of Kutch
NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd, a 100% subsidiary of NTPC, has received the go-ahead from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to set up a 4750 MW renewable energy park at Rann of Kutch in Khavada, Gujarat. This will be India’s largest solar park to be built by the largest power producer in the country. NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL), has been given the go-ahead by MNRE on 12th July 2021 under Mode 8 (Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park) of the Solar Park Scheme. NTPC REL has plans to generate green hydrogen on a commercial scale from this park. As a part of its green energy portfolio augmentation, NTPC Ltd, India’s largest energy integrated company aims to build 60 GW Renewable Energy Capacity by 2032. Currently, the state-owned power major has an installed capacity of 66 GW across 70 power projects with an additional 18 GW under construction. Recently, NTPC has also commissioned India’s largest Floating Solar of 10 MW (ac) on the reservoir of Simhadri Thermal Power Plant, Andhra Pradesh. An additional 15 MW (ac) would be commissioned by August 2021. Further, a 100 MW Floating Solar Project on the reservoir of Ramagundam Thermal Power Plant, Telangana is in the advanced stage of implementation. Additionally, NTPC RE Ltd. has recently signed an MoU with UT, Ladakh, and Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) for the generation of green hydrogen and deployment on FCEV buses. The signing of the MoU was also marked with the inauguration of NTPC’s first solar installations in Leh in form of solar trees and a solar car port.

Indian stem cell & developmental biologist part of WHO advisory committee on human genome editing
Indian stem cell and developmental biologist Prof. Maneesha S Inamdar has been part of the WHO Expert Advisory Committee on Developing Global Standards for Governance and Oversight of Human Genome Editing, which released two new companion reports providing the first global recommendations to help ensure that human genome editing is used for public health, with an emphasis on safety, effectiveness, and ethics. The reports, released on July 12, 2021, contained a forward-looking Governance Framework for oversight mechanisms for research into and potential application of human genome editing technology at institutional, national, regional, and international levels. Professor Maneesha S Inamdar, along with her group, is conducting research at the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bengaluru, an autonomous Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) that uses gene-editing tools to manipulate stem cells in vitro. This can generate disease models for scientific insight into human development and devising therapeutic strategies. She pioneered human embryonic stem cell derivation and use in India and has contributed significantly to national and international stem cell guidance documents, ethics committees, and training programs.
As part of the WHO Committee, she contributed scientific knowledge and perspective to provide guidance, expertise, and support throughout the project for the conceptualization and development of the WHO Governance Framework and Recommendations on Human Genome Editing. Representing the LMIC countries in Asia, she contributed with the Committee towards ensuring that in addition to scientific considerations, procedural and substantive values and principles such as inclusiveness, diversity, equity, and global health justice identified by the Committee, informed decisions. She is a member of the Education, Engagement, and Empowerment (3E) subgroup of the Committee, and as part of the committee, she was also involved in making recommendations to the Secretariat and WHO Director-General on global governance structures for human genome editing, considering the relevant broader issues associated with oversight and governance of emerging technologies.

21st Session of India-Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation
21st Session of India-Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) was held on 09th July 2021 virtually. Mr. Piyush Goyal, Commerce & Industry Minister, and Mr. Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy co-chaired the Session. Both sides held extensive discussions on bilateral trade and investment and economic cooperation in the areas of Food Processing, Textiles, Leather, Railways, Startups, and the promotion of SMEs which play a crucial role in economic growth and employment generation. The bilateral market access issues and non-tariff barriers were also discussed to facilitate trade and investment. The progress on the outcomes of the India-EU leaders Summit in Porto, Portugal was also reviewed. Indian side also raised the issues of Mutual recognition of the COWIN Vaccine Certificate and opening up of Travel restrictions, longer duration of Business Visas, and Portability of social security benefits of Indians working in Italy. Following the India-Italy JCEC G2G Meeting, a G2B Session focusing on Energy partnership was held virtually in the presence of the two Ministers. During the meeting, 3 Indian companies (Indian Oil Corporation, Adani Solar, ReNew Power) and 3 Italian companies (Enel Green Power, Snam, Maire Tecnimont) made presentations focusing on the areas of green economy, clean technology, and promotion of the use of renewable energy for grid-based multi-energy systems.

Indian economist Kaushik Basu honoured with Humboldt Research Award
Indian economist and professor at Cornell University Kaushik Basu has been awarded the Humboldt Research Award for Economics. Professor Kaushik Basu had earlier been conferred with the Padma Bhushan -- the third-highest civilian award in India. He was nominated for the Humboldt Research Award by Professor Dr Hans-Bernd Schäfer of Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany. China's Astronauts Carry out second Spacewalk in its History
Chinese astronauts successfully carried out the second spacewalk in the country's history as two of its three astronauts stepped out of the orbiting space station core module for seven hours and completed the designated tasks, China's space agency said. China's first spacewalk was conducted during the Shenzhou 7 manned mission in 2008. This mission was also China's first spacewalk outside the space station. China launched three male astronauts - Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo into space in June. Boming and Hongbo, stationed in the space station core module Tianhe, ventured outside to conduct the first extravehicular activities (EVAs) of their current mission with the support of a robotic arm, while Nie stayed in the cabin to command and assist them to conduct the tasks.
