Olympic medallist appointed first V-C of Delhi Sports University [24 Jun 2021]

Retired weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari, the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Olympics, has been appointed the first vice-chancellor of the Delhi government’s Delhi Sports University. Malleshwari won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She has also been awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, Arjuna Award and Padma Shri.

India retains 43rd rank on IMD's World Competitiveness Index [17 Jun 2021]

India has retained the 43rd spot in the World Competitiveness Index compiled by the Institute for Management Development (IMD). The country has maintained the same rank for the past three years, and its position on the list has not slipped despite the COVID-19 jolt to the economy. Although India continues to be ranked 43rd among the 64 countries whose competitiveness has been analysed, IMD noted that New Delhi has made significant improvements in governance.

The 64-nation list was led by Switzerland, while Sweden has moved up to the second position (from sixth last year), Denmark has lost one place to rank third, the Netherlands has retained its fourth place and Singapore has slipped to fifth place (from first in 2020). At eighth, Taiwan reached the top-10 for the first time since the ranking began 33 years ago (moving up from 11th last year). The UAE and the USA remain in their same spots as last year (9th and 10th, respectively).

Ebrahim Raisi becomes the new president of Iran. Ebrahim Raisi was born in 1960 in Mashhad, Iran's second-biggest city and home to the country's holiest Shia Muslim shrine. His father, who was a cleric, died when he was five years old. Mr. Raisi, who wears a black turban identifying him in Shia tradition as a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad, followed his father's footsteps and started attending a seminary in the holy city of Qom at the age of 15. After the revolution, he joined the judiciary and served as a prosecutor in several cities while being trained by Ayatollah Khamenei, who became Iran's president in 1981.

Mandatory Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery comes into force from 16th June [15 Jun 2021]

Mandatory Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery is going to come into force from tomorrow, 16th June 2021. Based on extensive consultations with stakeholders, the following decisions were taken-

  • Hallmarking will be initially be starting from.256 districts of the country which have Assaying marking centres.
  • Jewellers with annual turnover up to Rs. 40 lac will be exempted from mandatory Hall Marking.
  • Export and re-import of jewellery as per Trade Policy of Government of India - Jewellery for international exhibitions, jewellery for government-approved B2B domestic exhibitions will be exempted from mandatory Hall Marking.
  • Gold of Additional carats 20, 23 and 24 will also be allowed for Hall Marking.
  • Watches, fountain pens and special types of jewellery viz. Kundan, Polki and Jadau will be exempted from Hall Marking.
  • Jewellers can continue to buy back old gold jewellery without a hallmark from the consumer.
  • In order to give adequate time to the manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers of Gold Jewellery, there would be No penalties till August end.

DRDO develops Critical Near Isothermal Forging Technology for aeroengines [28 May 2021]

Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has established the near isothermal forging technology to produce all the five stages of high-pressure compressors (HPC) discs out of difficult-to-deform titanium alloy using its unique 2000 MT isothermal forge press. The technology has been developed by the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), a premier metallurgical laboratory of DRDO at Hyderabad. This is a crucial technology for establishing self-reliance in aero engine technology. With this development, India has joined the league of limited global engine developers to have the manufacturing capabilities of such critical aero-engine components.

Amartya Kumar Sen from India has won Spain's Princess of Asturias Award in the social sciences category [26 May 2021]

Indian economist and Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen have honoured with Spain's prestigious Princess of Asturias Award in the social sciences category. The Award foundation praised him as his research on famines and his theory of human development, welfare economics has contributed to the fight against injustice, inequality, disease and ignorance. The award comprises a Joan Miro sculpture representing and symbolizing the award, a diploma, an insignia and a cash prize of 50,000 Euros.

Padmakumar Madhavan Nair was named the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NARCL [25 May 2021]

State Bank of India's Padmakumar Madhavan Nair was in May 2021 named the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (NARCL) or commonly called Bad Bank. NARCL or Bad Bank is expected to be operational in June 2021. Nair, a career banker with SBI, has been Chief General Manager (CGM) in the Stressed Assets Resolution Group (SARG) of the bank since April 2020. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the creation of a bad bank in the 2021 Union Budget. The new entity will be in the form of an asset reconstruction company/asset management company to help the banking system get rid of the existing stock of problematic loans.

Cabinet approves Opening of a new Consulate General of India in Addu City, Maldives [25 May 2021]

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the opening of a new Consulate General of India in Addu City, Maldives in 2021. India and Maldives share ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious and commercial links steeped in antiquity. Maldives occupies an important place in the 'Neighbourhood First Policy' and the 'SAGAR’ (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision of the Government of India. Opening of a Consulate General in Addu City will help augment India's diplomatic presence in Maldives and make it commensurate with the existing and aspired level of engagement.
