India jumps 6 places on IMD's World Competitiveness Index
India has witnessed the sharpest rise among the Asian economies, with a six-position jump from 43rd to 37th rank on the annual World Competitiveness Index compiled by the Institute for Management Development, largely due to gains in economic performance. Denmark has moved to the top of the 63-nation list from the third position last year, while Switzerland slipped from the top ranking to the second position and Singapore regained the third spot from fifth, a global study showed.
First Liquid-Mirror Telescope to be Commissioned in India
A new telescope will keep a watch on the overhead sky to identify transient or variable objects such as supernovae, gravitational lenses, space debris, and asteroids. Unique Liquid-MirrorTelescope sees first light in the Indian Himalayas. The telescope, commissioned at Devasthal, a hill in Uttarakhand, will help in surveying the sky making it possible to observe several galaxies and other astronomical sources just by starting at the strip of sky that passes overhead. It is the first liquid mirror telescope in the country and the largest in Asia.

Cabinet approves MoA by India for establishment of BIMSTEC Technology Transfer Centre at Colombo, Sri Lanka
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved a Memorandum of Association (MoA) by India for the establishment of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Technology Transfer Facility (TTF) was signed by the BIMSTEC member countries at the 5th BIMSTEC Summit held at Colombo, Sri Lanka on 30th March 2022. The main objectives of the BIMSTEC TTF are to coordinate, facilitate and strengthen cooperation in technology transfer among the BIMSTEC Member States by promoting the transfer of technologies, sharing of experiences, and capacity building. The TTF shall facilitate the transfer of technologies among the BIMSTEC Member States, amongst other things, in the following priority areas Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Information and Communication Technology, Space technology applications, Agricultural technology, Food processing technology, Pharmaceutical technology automation, New and renewable energy technology automation, New and Renewable energy technology, Oceanography, Nuclear Technology Applications, E-waste, and solid waste management technology, Health Technologies, Technologies pertinent to Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation.
Cabinet clears ‘AGNIPATH’ scheme for recruitment of youth in the Armed Forces
The Union Cabinet approved an attractive recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the Armed Forces. The scheme is called AGNIPATH and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as Agniveers. AGNIPATH allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The AGNIPATH Scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces. It will provide an opportunity to the youth who may be keen to don the uniform by attracting young talent from the society who are more in tune with contemporary technological trends and plough back skilled, disciplined, and motivated manpower into the society.
Cabinet approves Development of New Greenfield Airport Dholera, Ahmedabad
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal for the development of Phase I of New Greenfield Airport at Dholera, Gujarat at an estimated cost of Rs. 1305 crore, to be completed within 48 months. The project is being implemented by Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL), which is a Joint Venture Company comprising the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the Government of Gujarat (GoG), and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT) holding equity in the ratio of 51:33:16.
G7 Summit 2022 hosted by Germany
At the invitation of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the Outreach Sessions of the G7 Summits on 12 and 13 June in virtual format. The UK currently holds the Presidency of the G7 and has invited India, along with Australia, the Republic of Korea, and South Africa, as Guest Countries for the G7 Summit. The meeting was held in hybrid mode. The theme for the summit is Build Back Better and the UK has outlined four priority areas for its Presidency. Group of Seven is an intergovernmental organization that was formed in 1975 and includes the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US. The G7 meets are held annually to discuss issues of common interest like global economic governance, internal security, and energy policy.

Five countries elected to UNSC as non-permanent members
Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland were elected to the UN Security Council as non-permanent members for the 2023-2024 term and will replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico, and Norway at the horse-shoe table from January 1 next year. Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland will join Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the UAE as well as the five permanent members China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US as UNSC members for the year 2023. India's two-year term at the UNSC as a non-permanent member will end in December 2022, when it was also holding the Presidency of the powerful UN organ.

Meghalaya recently won the 'Best Project' award at the United Nations World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held in Geneva for its paperless governance initiative, called 'e-Proposal System'. The initiative is a part of the Meghalaya Enterprise Architecture (MeghEA), set up in 2019 as part of the Digital India Mission, to improve service delivery to the state's residents. The goal of MeghEA — implemented by the state's planning department — is to standardize and organise the government department's IT structure.
RBI hikes Repo Rate by 50 basis points
The Monetary Policy Committee of Reserve Bank of India, which met from 6-8 June 2022, has unanimously decided to hike the Repo Rate by 50 basis points to 4.90 %. Consequently, Standing Deposit Facility Rate stands adjusted to 4.65% and the Marginal Standing Facility rate and Bank Rate to 5.15%. The MPC also decided to remain focused on the withdrawal of accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within the target going forward while supporting growth.
Cabinet approves Transfer of 10 In-orbit Communication Satellites from Government of India to M/s. NewSpace India Ltd.(NSIL)
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the transfer of 10 in-orbit communication satellites from the Government of India (Gol) to M/s.NewSpace India Ltd. (NSIL), a wholly-owned Public Sector Enterprise of GOI under the administrative control of the Department of Space.The Union Cabinet has also approved increasing the authorized share capital of NSIL from Rs.1000 crore to Rs.7500 crore. Transfer of these assets to NSIL will further provide the desired financial autonomy to the company to realize capital-intensive programmes/ projects and thereby offering huge employment potential and technology spin-off to other sectors of the economy. This approval is expected to trigger domestic economic activity in the space sector and increase India's share in the global space market.The Space Sector reforms mandated NSIL to undertake end-to-end commercial space activities and function as a full-fledged satellite operator. NSIL functioning as a single-window operator will also facilitate the ease of doing business in the space sector. NSIL Board will now be empowered to price the transponders as per the market dynamics and global trends in the Satellite Communication sector. NSIL is also authorized to offer and allocate capacity as per its internal policies and guidelines.

Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, successfully tested
A successful training launch of an Intermediate-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-4, was carried out from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha. The successful test was part of routine user training launches carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command. The launch validated all operational parameters as also the reliability of the system. The successful test reaffirms India's policy of having a 'Credible Minimum Deterrence' Capability.
Indian Army Contingent Participates In Multinational Joint Exercise “Ex Khaan Quest 2022” Hosted By Mongolia
A Multinational Peacekeeping exercise “Ex Khaan Quest 2022” featuring participation from military contingents from 16 countries have commenced in Mongolia today. Mr. Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh, the Hon’ble President of Mongolia inaugurated the Exercise in an impressive ceremony organized at the exercise location in Mongolia. Indian Army is represented by a contingent from the LADAKH SCOUTS. The 14-day exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability, building military to military relationships, and developing peace support operations and military readiness among participating nations. The exercise will also enable sharing of best practices between the Armed Forces of participating nations and will include field training exercises, combat discussions, lectures, and demonstrations. The military exercise will enhance the level of defense cooperation between the Indian Army and participating countries, especially with the Mongolian Armed Forces which will enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
