PM lays the foundation stone of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar
The Prime Minister laid the foundation stone of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, in the presence of the Prime Minister of Mauritius Mr. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, and Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization (WHO). GCTM will be the first and only global outpost centre for traditional medicine across the world. It will emerge as an international hub of global wellness. Video messages from the Prime Ministers of Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and the President of Maldives were played on the occasion. Union Ministers Dr. Mansukh Mandavia, Shri Sabananda Sonowal, Shri Munjapara Mahendrabhai, and Chief Minister of Gujarat Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel were among those present.
Government appoints Lt Gen Manoj C Pande as new Chief of Army Staff
Government has appointed Lt Gen Manoj C Pande, presently Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of April 30, 2022. Born on May 06, 1962, Lt Gen Manoj C Pande was commissioned on December 24, 1982 in the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers) of the Indian Army. During his long and distinguished service spanning over 39 years, he has served in a variety of Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. The Command appointments of Lt Gen Manoj C Pande include Command of an Engineer Brigade in the Western Theatre, as part of Strike Corps and an Infantry Brigade along with Line-of-Control in Jammu & Kashmir. Other important Command appointments include a Mountain Division in the high-altitude area of the Western Ladakh and Command of a Corps, deployed along the LAC and in Counter Insurgency Operations area of Eastern Command.
Prabhat Patnaik Selected for Malcom Adiseshiah Award 2022
Dr. Prabhat Patnaik is an educator, economist, and political commentator and has taught at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning in the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi and was the Vice Chairman of the State Planning Board, Kerala. The award is given by the Malcom and Elizabeth Adiseshia Trust to an outstanding social scientist in the memory and respect of Economist Malcom and his wife Elizabeth. Malcom Sathiyanathan Adiseshia was an Indian development economist and educator. In 1976 he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1978.
Rajasthan becomes first state to get L-root server
Rajasthan has become the first State in the country to get the L-root server, which will enable the State government to provide its flagship digital services and enforce e-governance with seamless internet connectivity. The new facility will strengthen internet infrastructure and help improve the security and resilience of internet-based operations. The new server has been installed at the Bhamashah State Data Centre here in association with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

NMDC Wins two Awards at 80th SKOCH Summit 2022
The largest iron ore producer of India, National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), under the Ministry of Steel awarded one gold and one silver award in the 80th SKOCH Summit and SKOCH Awards recently conducted by SKOCH, New Delhi. The theme for the SKOCH Summit was ‘State of BFSI & PSUs’. NMDC won the Gold Award in the category of social responsibility for the project ‘Promotion of Technical Education & Skill Development in Dantewada District through NMDC ITI Bhansi’ and the Silver Award in the category of digital inclusion for the ‘Project Kalpataru’ for ERP implementation. The awards were received by Shri Amitava Mukherjee, Director (Finance) via video conferencing on behalf of Chairman and Managing Director, Shri Sumit Deb. The SKOCH Awards were given to the winners based on the application submitted on their website, a presentation to the jury followed by three rounds of popular online voting, and the second round of jury evaluation. In addition to the above, NMDC also received the 3 SKOCH – Order of Merit Awards for its exemplary efforts in ensuring seamless digitalization in Project Kalpataru, for its expansive CSR efforts in promoting technical education and skill development in the remote districts of Dantewada, and “Project Safety First” in the category Response to COVID.

DRDO successfully flight-tests Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet technology
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) booster at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on April 08, 2022. The test successfully demonstrated the reliable functioning of all critical components involved in the complex missile system and met all the mission objectives.The SFDR-based propulsion enables the missile to intercept aerial threats at very long range at supersonic speeds. The performance of the system has been confirmed from the data captured by a number of range instruments like Telemetry, Radar and Electro Optical Tracking Systems deployed by ITR. The SFDR has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories such as Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune.

Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s ambassador to Nepal, to take over from Shringla as Foreign Secretary
The government named Vinay Mohan Kwatra, India’s ambassador to Nepal, as the next Foreign Secretary. He will take charge as the Foreign Secretary, when incumbent Harsh Vardhan Shringla retires on April 30. Kwatra is a member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) with an experience of nearly 32 years in a range of assignments. He has worked in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office from 2015 to 2017 before he went to France as India’s ambassador.

Exercise Varuna 2022 Culminated
The culmination of the 20th edition of the Indo-French bilateral Naval exercise ‘Varuna-2022’ took place on 03 Apr 22. The exercise this year has an expanded scope cover a broad spectrum of maritime operations. The eventful tactical sea phase of the exercise laid primary focus on advanced anti-submarine warfare tactics, gunnery shoots, seamanship evolutions, tactical manoeuvres and extensive air operations. The units also undertook cross deck landings by integral helicopters, showcasing a high level of interoperability between them. Gun firing and underway replenishment procedures were also exercised between ships. The final phase of the exercise progressed with tapered focus on advanced anti-submarine warfare (ASW) exercises. INS Chennai with Sea King Mk 42B, maritime patrol aircraft P8i, French Navy frigate FS Courbet, support vessel FS Loire, and other units exercised on full spectrum of ASW operations. The later part of the exercise also included exchange of sea-riders at sea.

Noted poet and literature Professor Ramdarash Mishra will be awarded the prestigious Saraswati Samman, 2022, for his collection of Poems, "Mein to Yahan Hun" announced by the K. K. Birla Foundation. Prof. Mishra was born in Dumri village in Gorakhpur district in Uttar Pradesh in 1924. He has to his credit 32 collections of poems, 15 novels, 30 short story collections, 15 books of literary criticism, 4 collections of Essays, travelogues, and several memoirs. He retired as a pro¬fessor from the Hindi Department of the University of Delhi. Saraswati Samman carries a citation, a plaque, and a cash prize of 15 lakh.

Ajay Kumar Sood appointed as principal scientific adviser to Govt. India
Ajay Kumar Sood of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has been appointed as the new Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India for three years with effect from the date he assumes charge of the post. The post of Adviser was lying vacant after the retirement of K. Vijay Raghavan on April 2, 2022. Ajay Kumar Sood is now an honorary Professor of Physics at IISC Bengaluru. He is also serving as a member of the Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 2013.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru, AVSM, NM assumed charge as Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff on 31 Mar 22. Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 85 and is a Submarine and Navigation Specialist. In his career spanning over 37 years, he has held a variety of Command and Staff appointments both ashore and afloat. The Flag Officer has commanded INS Shalki, a Type 1500 Shishumar Class submarine, Cadets Training Ship INS Krishna, and Destroyer INS Rajput. He has also commanded INS Satavahana the Navy’s Submarine Training Establishment where he set up the School for Advanced Underwater Warfare. In his staff tenures, he has served in the Directorate of Submarine Operations and Directorate of Nuclear Submarine Acquisition at IHQ MoD (N). He has also carried out duties as Naval Assistant to FOC-in-C (West) and FOC-in-C (South).
Surat gets India’s first steel slag road
Surat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road built as part of a joint-venture project by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Union Ministry of Steel, government think-tank NITI Ayog, and ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel (AM/NS), at Hazira. The slag is generated from a steel furnace burning at around 1,500-1,600 degree centigrade in the form of molten flux material as an impurity. The molten material is poured into the slag pits for cooling as per the customized procedure and further processed to develop stable steel slag aggregates.

Ila Patnaik, former Principal Economic Advisor, to join Aditya Birla Group as Chief Economist
Former Principal Economic Advisor Ila Patnaik is due to join aluminum-to-financial services conglomerate Aditya Birla Group as Chief Economist. Patnaik joins the conglomerate two months after Economist and Political Analyst Ajit Ranade left the position. Ranade has since assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. Patnaik is a senior fellow and professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), a Delhi-based Finance Ministry think tank. Prior to joining NIPFP, Patnaik had worked at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), the Indian Council for Research in International Economic Relations (ICRIER), and as Economics Editor at the Indian Express. She served as the Principal Economic Advisor to the Government from May 2014 to December 2015. She had also been part of several internal working groups in the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India.
5th BIMSTEC Summit
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the 5th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit hosted in virtual mode by Sri Lanka, the current chair of BIMSTEC. Prior to the 5th BIMSTEC Summit, preparatory meetings at the Senior Official and Foreign Minister levels were held in Colombo on 28th and 29th March in the hybrid mode. The Summit’s theme “Towards a Resilient Region, Prosperous Economies, Healthy People” captures the main current priorities of member states, and the efforts by BIMSTEC to develop cooperation activities that support member states’ programs to deal with the economic and development consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The main outcome of the Summit was the adoption and signing of the BIMSTEC Charter, which formalizes the grouping into an organization made up of members states that are littoral to, and dependent upon, the Bay of Bengal. The Summit also saw considerable progress being achieved in the BIMSTEC connectivity agenda with the adoption of the ‘Master Plan for Transport Connectivity’ by Leaders which lays out a guidance framework for connectivity-related activities in the region in the future.
