Ajay Kumar Sood appointed as principal scientific adviser to Govt. India [02 Apr 2022]

Ajay Kumar Sood of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has been appointed as the new Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India for three years with effect from the date he assumes charge of the post. The post of Adviser was lying vacant after the retirement of K. Vijay Raghavan on April 2, 2022. Ajay Kumar Sood is now an honorary Professor of Physics at IISC Bengaluru. He is also serving as a member of the Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Council to the Prime Minister. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 2013.

Dr. S Raju Takes over as DG, Geological Survey of India [02 Apr 2022]

Dr. S Raju has taken over as the Director-General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Kolkata today. He succeeds Shri R. S. Garkhal who superannuated on 31st March 2022. Prior to assuming the present post, Dr. Raju was holding the post of Additional Director General and National Head, Mission-III & IV at GSI HQ. After taking over as DG, GSI Dr. Raju said that the Geological Survey of India is poised to focus continuously on the programs of core national importance in the field of mineral resources augmentation in the country and to aim for closer interactions and engagements with the mining sector, industries and academic institutes of national and international repute.

He was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jan 85 and is a Submarine and Navigation Specialist. In his career spanning over 37 years, he has held a variety of Command and Staff appointments both ashore and afloat. The Flag Officer has commanded INS Shalki, a Type 1500 Shishumar Class submarine, Cadets Training Ship INS Krishna, and Destroyer INS Rajput. He has also commanded INS Satavahana the Navy’s Submarine Training Establishment where he set up the School for Advanced Underwater Warfare. In his staff tenures, he has served in the Directorate of Submarine Operations and Directorate of Nuclear Submarine Acquisition at IHQ MoD (N). He has also carried out duties as Naval Assistant to FOC-in-C (West) and FOC-in-C (South).

Surat gets India’s first steel slag road [01 Apr 2022]

Surat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road built as part of a joint-venture project by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Union Ministry of Steel, government think-tank NITI Ayog, and ArcelorMittal-Nippon Steel (AM/NS), at Hazira. The slag is generated from a steel furnace burning at around 1,500-1,600 degree centigrade in the form of molten flux material as an impurity. The molten material is poured into the slag pits for cooling as per the customized procedure and further processed to develop stable steel slag aggregates.

Ila Patnaik, former Principal Economic Advisor, to join Aditya Birla Group as Chief Economist [30 Mar 2022]

Former Principal Economic Advisor Ila Patnaik is due to join aluminum-to-financial services conglomerate Aditya Birla Group as Chief Economist. Patnaik joins the conglomerate two months after Economist and Political Analyst Ajit Ranade left the position. Ranade has since assumed charge as the Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. Patnaik is a senior fellow and professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), a Delhi-based Finance Ministry think tank. Prior to joining NIPFP, Patnaik had worked at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), the Indian Council for Research in International Economic Relations (ICRIER), and as Economics Editor at the Indian Express. She served as the Principal Economic Advisor to the Government from May 2014 to December 2015. She had also been part of several internal working groups in the Finance Ministry and the Reserve Bank of India.

5th BIMSTEC Summit [30 Mar 2022]

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi participated in the 5th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Summit hosted in virtual mode by Sri Lanka, the current chair of BIMSTEC. Prior to the 5th BIMSTEC Summit, preparatory meetings at the Senior Official and Foreign Minister levels were held in Colombo on 28th and 29th March in the hybrid mode. The Summit’s theme “Towards a Resilient Region, Prosperous Economies, Healthy People” captures the main current priorities of member states, and the efforts by BIMSTEC to develop cooperation activities that support member states’ programs to deal with the economic and development consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. The main outcome of the Summit was the adoption and signing of the BIMSTEC Charter, which formalizes the grouping into an organization made up of members states that are littoral to, and dependent upon, the Bay of Bengal. The Summit also saw considerable progress being achieved in the BIMSTEC connectivity agenda with the adoption of the ‘Master Plan for Transport Connectivity’ by Leaders which lays out a guidance framework for connectivity-related activities in the region in the future.

India's first Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Technology Park (ARTPARK) for creating a better world through an inclusive Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Robotics revolution have been inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru, Karnataka. It was launched by the Government of Karnataka's Minister for Information, Biotechnology and Science and Technology, Dr. C. N. Ashwath Narayan. It is a joint initiative of IISc Bengaluru and AL Foundry, Bengaluru in a public-private collaborative model to promote technological innovations in the field of AI & Robotics. ARTPARK, is a one-of-its-kind, not-for-profit foundation with a total seed capital of Rs.230 crore, which is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India with Rs. 170 crore and the Government of Karnataka with T 60 crore to create cutting edge innovations in terms of new technologies, standards, products, services, and intellectual properties outside of India.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in India for Two Days Bilateral Summit [19 Mar 2022]

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is in India (first visit India since assuming office last year) for two days to attend the bilateral summit. He was received at the Delhi airport by Ashwini Vaishnaw (Railways Minister) on 18 March, 2022. The Indian Prime Minister held bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on 19 March 2022 for the 14th India-Japan Annual Summit. This summit is regarded as the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. The previous India-Japan annual summit took place in October 2018 between PM Modi and the then Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Karolina Bielawska from Poland was crowned Miss World 2021 at the 70th edition of the Miss World beauty pageant in San Juan, Puerto Rico beating 96 contestants across the globe. Bielawska was crowned the Miss World title by her predecessor Toni- Ann Singh of Jamaica at the finale. This is the second MissWorld title for Poland.

36th International Geological Congress to be held in New Delhi [16 Mar 2022]

The 36th International Geological Congress (IGC), themed “Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Future” will be held here during 20-22 March 2022 on a virtual platform. The 36th IGC is a joint endeavour of the Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, and the Science Academies of Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Described as the Olympics of Geosciences, the IGCs are held quadrennial, under the aegis of the International Union of Geological Congress (IUGS), the Scientific Sponsor of the IGCs. They draw participants to the tune of around 5000 - 7000 delegates from all over the world.The event would provide a unique platform for knowledge and experience sharing in the field of geosciences and professional networking. It would give first-hand information on the latest technologies in mining, mineral exploration, and management of water, mineral resource, and the environment. It would also facilitate increased academic production and create opportunities for capacity building across geoscientific streams.

Chief Justice D. N. Patel of Delhi HC Appointed as Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) [12 Mar 2022]

Cabinet approves establishment of WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in India [09 Mar 2022]

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (WHO GCTM) in Jamnagar, Gujarat by signing a Host Country agreement between the Government of India and the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO GCTM will be established in Jamnagar under the Ministry of AYUSH. This would be the first and only global outposted Centre (office) for traditional medicine across the globe.

HANSA-NG successfully completes sea level trials at Puducherry [06 Mar 2022]

India’s first indigenous Flying Trainer HANSA-NG designed and developed by CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratories, Bangalore under the aegis of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, has successfully completed the sea level trials at Puducherry from 19th February to 5th March 2022. The aircraft was flown to Puducherry covering 140 nautical miles in one and half hours at a cruising speed of 155 km/hr on 19th February 22. The objectives of sea level trials were to evaluate handling qualities, climb / cruise performance, balked landing, structural performance including positive & negative G, power plant, and other systems performance. CSIR-NAL sources said that all the objectives of the sea level trials are met and the aircraft has been ferried back to Bangalore on 5th March 2022 after completing 18 hours of flying at Puducherry. The aircraft was piloted by Wg. Cdr. K V Prakash and Wg. Cdr. Dilip Reddy of ASTE. The flight was monitored by CSIR-NAL designers and Wg. Cdr. Reeju Chakraborty as Flight Test Director from telemetry. HANSA-NG is one of the most advanced flying trainers powered by Rotax Digital Control Engine with unique features like Just-In-Time Prepreg (JIPREG) Composite lightweight Airframe, Glass Cockpit, Bubble Canopy with wide panoramic view, electrically operated flaps, etc. CSIR-NAL further said that HANSA-NG is designed to meet the Indian flying club needs and it is an ideal aircraft for Commercial Pilot Licensing (CPL) due to its low cost and low fuel consumption. NAL has already received more than 80 nos. of LoIs (Letter of Intents) from various flying clubs.

India's 1st Indigenous Train Collision Avoidance Systems 'Kavach' Successfully Tested by Indian Railways [04 Mar 2022]

The Indigenously-developed India's first Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) 'Kavach' was successfully tested by Indian Railways. The test was conducted between Gullaguda-Chitgidda Railway stations on the Lingampalli-Vikarabad section in Secunderabad Division of South Central Railway while on board the locomotive, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, Ministry of Railways, and Vinay Kumar Tripathi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Railway Board. This system will help, the Railways achieve the goal of 'zero accidents' as it enables the trains to stop on their own if the digital system notices any manual error like jumping of the red signal or another other malfunction.
